INSURANCE
For many of you, this is a trip of a lifetime, an investment of not only time, energy but also money. To protect your investments and your selves, it is always wise to secure the appropriate insurance to cover you from the unexpected. In all of your preparations, we always have to be prepared for the unexpected—whether it is a global pandemic, a twisted ankle, a change in plans, etc. For this reason, Drawn to the Camino outlines the following:
Medical Travel Insurance: Drawn to the Camino requires all participants to purchase medical travel insurance, with a minimum of $200,000.00USD evacuation and repatriation coverage, including personal injury and all forms of medical expense. Some trips may have higher minimum medical coverage requirements, which are set out on the DTTC website trip page. Proof of insurance coverage for DTTC is due 1 week before travel. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of participation. For a list of recommended insurers, please see this form:
Travel and Personal Insurance: Drawn to the Camino strongly recommends that you get comprehensive travel insurance, including trip cancellation / interruption insurance. Travel insurance minimizes your risk exposure for the duration of your travel—not just whether your plane leaves on time or whether your luggage gets lost. Most good insurance will cover some or all of the costs associated with Covid-19, theft, lost or delayed luggage, and accidents and emergencies (including emergency extraction and repatriation) when you are traveling.
With the many experiences you will have over the course of 40 days on the Camino de Santiago, it is essential that you secure travel insurance for your trip.
TRAVELING SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY
Traveling during these complex times requires a lot more care. At Drawn to the Camino’s core is a sustainable, ecological, and locally responsible form of travel. We work hard to build strong reliable relationships with our local partners and, most importantly, we believe that walking, engaging with the Nature and local culture in a one to one relationship is the most responsible way to engage with the world during these changing and critical times.
Traveling safely and responsibly also means acknowledging that the destination(s) to which they are travelling may have living standards and practices, and conditions with respect to the provision of utilities, services and accommodation, that are different from those enjoyed at home. We encourage all Drawn to the Camino participants to be open to those differences.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Health
It is participant’s responsibility to check with the country’s Consulate and your own country’s official travel website for travel advice and advisories. US-based travelers, can find current information here.
Most importantly, we encourage participants to check with their doctor about their current health and/or vaccine status and any additional requirements for your destination such as securing all prescriptions for the duration of our itinerary prior to travel.
Safety
Drawn to the Camino organizes trips in remote natural environments, rural districts and metropolitan of Spain. Unpredictable weather conditions can increase risk. There can be unexpected, dangerous encounters with vehicles, bicycles and wildlife. It is essential that everyone obeys the rules and regulations imposed by DTTC and follow instructions. The decisions of Drawn to the Camino leaders or other representatives will be final on all matters likely to affect the safety and well-being of the group.
Please be aware that we reserve the right to prohibit any traveller from continuing on a trip without refund if it’s determined that the traveller’s actions pose a threat to the safety of others, wildlife or themselves. If the traveller’s actions and/or behaviours are disrupting the enjoyment of the trip for others, they will also be asked to leave, without entitlement to a refund.
COVID-19, Vaccination and Testing
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination may be required by the destination in which the trip is taking place to participate in any trip. COVID-19 testing may also be required by destination countries and/or the trip supplier and the cost of any testing is the responsibility of Client. Drawn to the Camino strongly suggests that all participants be up to date on all boosters and have secured their latest booster no sooner than 2 weeks before travel and no later than 6 months before travel. Having a strong immune response will ensure quick resolution of symptoms should they occur on your journey.
COVID extensive policies are outlined here: and detailed COVID trip protocols will be discussed and reiterated in pre-trip briefings.
Trips Fitness Level: 3 out of 5 / Moderate
What is a Fitness Level of 3 out of 5:
Outdoor adventures are rated in three levels: Easy (1,2), Moderate (3,4) and Challenging (5). As the abilities of everybody are different, it’s important that you determine whether the Camino de Santiago suits your own needs and capabilities.
When grading our holidays, we take 3 main factors into consideration:
• Distance
• Gradient
• Trail Type (i.e. mountain track, forest road, surfaced road, etc.)
Easy (1,2)
• Time: Under 5 hours per day on average.
• Gradient: Gentle, no steep climbs.
• Trail Type: Walking path, easily accessible.
• Suitable for: Everybody. Some easy preparation walks should increase your enjoyment.
Moderate (3,4)
• Time: 5 to 8 hours / less than 20-30km per day on average.
• Gradient: Up to 1000m ascent per day on average, possibility of some steep climbing.
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, not technically difficult.
• Suitable for: Moderate level of fitness required. Some weekend walks of around 3-4 hours should help your preparation with several walks with your pack pre-trip.
Challenging (5)
• Time: Days can be over 9 hours / 30km.
• Gradient: Days can be more than 1000m, some steep climbing.
• Trail Type: Walking paths, mountain trails, can be technically difficult.
• Suitable for: Good level of fitness required. Previous experience would be best. Regular weekend walks of 4-5 hours or more are advisable in the months leading up to the trip. These should include some mountain walks.
*All Drawn to the Camino participants will receive a Camino training regimen to use as a guide.
Is it for someone like me?
You may be active and fit for a 30 year old or a 60 year old. Or a completely sedentary 21 year old, thinking nothing can stop you. It is true that we can do this trip together. Drawn to the Camino does not approach pilgrimage, long distance walking and hiking as an elite sport, nor are our trips the means to an end, a check off the bucket list or the selfie shot. The beauty of nature and the rural is part of our essential being, reminding us we are alive and part of a human fabric that goes back millennia. Our trip is about being present in the moment, moving from being here and getting to there. But we seek a balance between the two, keeping each other healthy and well cared for.
You may not be in the best shape of your life or not in shape at all. The Camino de Santiago is open for all levels with different routes providing different kinds of access. However the reality is that our trips are at a moderate fitness level 3 out of 5 due to some days of difficult terrain and the continued exertion over the 30+ days. Is it right for me? Absolutely! We have to first get moving. Start slow, and we will go from there.
How fit do I have to be?
There is no walking the Camino de Santiago without training and physical, as well as mental preparation. You will have to set time aside for, at minimum, a full 6 weeks in advance of the trip. Not doing so is not only a risk to yourself, and to the group, but also to your guides who are expending energy for someone who did not take their health or the experience of the group seriously. Preparation and training will not only make the journey easier, but it will make it more enjoyable. While it’s no small feat, training for the Camino de Santiago and getting your fitness to a comfortable level in order to tackle the Camino is more than possible, and we are here to help you achieve that goal so that you are ready for your Camino adventure.
While on the trip, we work really hard to make sure you meet your goal of completing the journey. Please read our FAQs, check with your physician, and fill out the medical questionnaire honestly to best be able to support you on your path.
So if you are worried about your fitness level or ability to take this on, we are here to help you answer that question. If our trip is not for you, we will help you find and build the trip that is.
